Yutan Guidance Newsletter

September

Dear Parents, Juniors & Seniors,

We are off to a good start for the 2017-18 school year.  This will be a busy year for the seniors! A senior timeline is enclosed.  I have met with the senior class to review the senior timeline and responsibilities for the senior year.  In addition, I will be meeting with all the seniors individually to discuss their plans following graduation. Many college planning materials & videos can be found at the educationquest.org website.  I would encourage all parents to explore this site, as they are the experts in Nebraska for college planning and financial aid.  They are also a free service.  On October 5th at 8:15 a.m. EducationQuest will be at the school to review and assist in completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Parents are encouraged to attend with their senior and complete the application together.

For the months of September and October, seniors need to be visiting colleges and college representatives that come to our school to help narrow down their choices.  If you are fairly sure about a college, you may want to put your application in early as to not miss scholarship deadlines.  You should also be taking the ACT for the second or third time if you are planning on attending a four-year college.  The registration deadline for the October 28th  ACT national exam is Friday, September 22nd. Late registration deadline is Friday, October 6th.   Registration information is available in the counseling office and on the website, www.actstudent.org.  The high school code you will need for Yutan High School is 282-600.  We will also be testing in Yutan on Tuesday, October 3rd.  ACT registration forms were mailed out a couple weeks ago.  If you want to take this exam but forgot to signup please see me.  Juniors will take the John Baylor Test Prep beginning in January.  The information and study skills will be very helpful in your preparations for the exam.  We recommend that juniors begin taking the ACT in February if you haven’t already done so.  Nebraska requires all juniors to take the ACT on Tuesday, April 3rd at their high schools.

Seniors planning on playing a varsity sport in college should see me in regards to the NCAA/NAIA eligibility.  There are certain eligibility requirements you must meet and online registration to the Eligibility Centers.  ACT scores must also be sent to them so be sure to include this in the college section on the ACT registration.  The code number for NCAA Eligibility Center is 9999 and 9876 for the NAIA Eligibility Center.  For more information, stop by the counseling office.

Juniors will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday, October 11th at Yutan High School.  The PSAT is recommended for juniors who are preparing for a four-year college and have taken a strong course curriculum.  It is also good practice for the ACT or SAT exam.  By taking the PSAT you are also entered into the National Merit Scholarship Program.  Cost is $16.  If interested and you forgot to signup please see me asap as we may have extra exams ordered.

If you have not been on the Yutan High School Counseling website you may want to check it out.  I am posting many things on a regular basis.  All dates of college representatives, college open house dates, testing dates and scholarships will be posted in the “Important Dates” section.  You can also find the current scholarship list, college representatives and other important information on the Family Connection website at https://connection.naviance.com/yutan. If you have been receiving emails from me you should be able to connect to this site.  If you have trouble logging in please contact me.  If you do not receive emails from me then you are not registered and we need to get you signed up.  All the students work from this Family Connection website.  Please call if you have any questions, 625-2241 ext 107.  Jodie Limbach is the part-time Guidance Para and can help you as well.

Sincerely,
