JANUARY GUIDANCE NEWS
Dear Juniors, Seniors and Parents:
With second semester beginning, the senior count down soon begins. It’s also the beginning of our biggest scholarship application season!
Seniors…the college application process should be close to finalized and you should be focusing on your financial award packages, applying for housing and continuing to search and apply for scholarships. We have several new scholarships that are available and yet to be awarded. Please check the scholarship listing attached and on the high school counselor’s website. Remember that many scholarships require recommendations and essays so get started early. Local scholarship applications are due February 28th. If you haven’t already, complete your FAFSA. If you need help the EducationQuest Foundation is the expert in this area and are a free service to all students and parents in Nebraska. Call 1-888-357-6300 to make an appointment.
Juniors…have begun their ACT preparation with John Baylor. Since the ACT is now our state required assessment all juniors are participating in the ACT Test Prep Sessions. Enclosed is the schedule for the ACT review sessions. The last session is right before the February National ACT exam. I would recommend taking this exam as everything will be fresh in your mind. The registration deadline for the February 10th ACT is Friday, January 12th. You will need to signup online with ACT at www.act.org. It takes about 45 minutes to complete. Juniors should plan to take the ACT as many times as possible. We recommend two times your junior year and two your senior year. The best score is what colleges and scholarship programs consider. We will be giving the ACT at YHS on April 3rd which is a required state assessment. Please plan to be in attendance as it is difficult to make this up later. All juniors are required to take the April 3rd exam and the state pays for it.
Juniors are encouraged to begin making college visits this spring and summer. There will be spring College Affaires held in Millard and Lincoln the end of April. In addition, we have colleges coming to Yutan for their spring visits. Juniors are encouraged to take advantage of as many of these as you can. You will never know about all the available colleges if you don’t explore. Students just need to sign up in the counseling office before the first bell the day of the visit. If you are interested in a sport or activity in college visiting the representatives will be a good start to getting some colleges looking at you.
Stop by the guidance office to pick up any applications you feel you may qualify for. Please call if you have any questions.
